John arrived in Sparwood last night at 1 a.m., with a bike caked in mud. What a day.... 146 miles and 17 hours of riding. Well done, John! He maintained a steady pace at 10 mph, midway positioning in the pack, through snow, rain and lots of mud. He had a quick dinner in Elkford at 8:30 p.m. (mile 102) and decided to press on as planned.
His reports from the trail:
"Carnage today.... bikes blowing up in the mud. Lots of damaged egos."
Thank God for his Rolhoff hub. I remember him debating the expense, but now we know it is the best money he has ever spent. He is lucky he could build the ideal bike for this race.

He is off again this morning after only 4 hours of sleep. He seems psyched and ready to get into Montana.
