French Technique

This pack is a direct reproduction of the classic French built Millet climbing pack of the 50-70's. It had been on my to-do list for two years and I was happy to turn the design project over to Carmen, my design intern.

This style of the pack had been built by Millet for decades. there were lots of slightly different versions. This one was based on the sample I own. There will be a larger version, with traditional leather bottom out at some point.

The name comes from the old flat footed ice climbing technique, used before there were front point crampons suitable for front pointing up steep ice. Chouinard's book " Climbing Ice" has a whole chapter devoted to it.

While the originals were made out of cotton canvas, this version is made with 16-ounce ballistic nylon. This heavy fabric gives the same feel and hand as the original but provides greater durability and weather resistance.

specs:

  • 16 oz. ballistics nylon
  • 10mm foam padded back
  • zippered pocket on the underside of the lid
  • classic metal hardware
